In 2023 Carol decided to follow her intuition and take her acrylic painting to the next level of 'serious fun' and begin a professional artistic journey, sharing her work outside of her friend and family circle. 

Carol's art alternates between loose landscapes and impressionistic animals. Her works are colorful, as well as muted expressions of what moves her spirit and provides her emotional response to the subject before her. Carol takes inspiration from Southwestern Alberta's rugged scenery, gentle meadows, wildlife and frontier spirit. 

With decades of experience in alternative health, Carol felt moved to bring vibrational healing into each piece of work created. Her paintings are infused with an empowerment spray called 'Sound Essence.' This unique infusion incorporates healing vibrations, elevating the frequency of each painting through a harmonious blend of sound, color, crystals, aroma, gems, symbology, sacred geometry, and positive words. 

Starting out as a self-taught artist, Carol also has been mentored by Sharon Kulhavey and Mary Broers at Final Touch Studio in Cochrane, AB. 11 that were documented out of nearly 500 + spray paint cans. Years ago, when I was doing more of the mixed media art, I would be using multiple spray cans. What else does one do with empty cans?

I’ve been drawing since I was young. I remember competing with my friends in Primary school, play grounds, to see who could come up with the best drawing, I always found myself on the top. I never took the art serious until year 9 (grade 9) when I did a drawing of a Timon and Pumba from the Lion King in art class. I did it with pen I really didn’t take it serious but it seemed everyone else in class thought it was great. This was the moment I started to believe that maybe there is something for me in art.I just started to draw more no direction really, I just drew what I thought was beautiful or inspired me in the moment.
My first “serious” drawing was in 2017 and in the last 5 years I have really seen myself grow as an individual and artist. Realizing that anyone can draw but not everyone is an artist. Being an artist has a lot to do with your taste. I’m a storyteller and I love telling stories through my artwork. I love making my audience feel things through my artwork, especially nostalgia because I believe there no emotions stronger than emotions stimulated by memories of the past. Being an African teaches you to value small things around you, the moments we take for granted, the moments than make us human.
Ironically being African hasn’t limited me to drawing people that look like me alone but people of different race and ethnicities .My former school years were spent in international schools so I learnt a lot about different cultures and ethnicities As an Artist I told myself that I am an international citizen before I am a citizen to my continent or country.

My journey as an artist hasn’t been the easiest, like an artists the frustration of being misunderstood can be overwhelming. I’ve fought with a lot doubts and fears especially coming from a third world country. I’ve been told art wouldn’t take me anywhere and a lot of different ways from a lot of different people, even galleries. Getting over my fears and doubts would’ve been impossible if it wasn’t for the support I got from friends my Mother and most of all my religion. There were times I felt I didn’t want to pick up a pencil again but my mother would come into my room with new supplies and lecture. My relationship with God is the pillar to my whole life especially my artwork, it all started with a prayer to Him and the scripture “your gift will bring you before kings and not mere men”.
I have a catalogue of role models but my greatest inspiration is Norman Rockwell. His passion for American culture and to present things the world doesn’t see. His ability to tell a story with his art is so unmatched.

Artist Biography - Jeweliyana Reece

Jeweliyana was born in Germany. Her family moved to Calgary when she was small but her affinity for foreign lands and languages stayed with her. She’s visited many countries including a solo backpacking adventure through Europe in the 80’s. Along with all the art classes, she studied Spanish at night school. 
She started out as a geological technician in her early years but her love of people called her in to the promotional products industry where she worked until 2010 when she opened Infused Glass Works to begin her career as an artist full time. 
Her work has received the People’s Choice Award from Parks Canada and has been featured in prestigious events such as Art Takes Times Square, NY, USA and Ottawa’s Snow Flake Charity Ball. It’s been published in ‘Best of World Wide Glass’ and Spectrum Glass Company’s global product catalogue.
 She currently creates and teaches from her home studio in Calgary. 
 
Her Story

I am a happy mad scientist at heart. Pretty sure my middle name was “How?” when I was growing up. I believe in possibilities and have learned over the years that questions are like seeds, they give birth to the answers. 
In school I did everything “Art”. After that, needing a way to pay rent, I did like most and entered the corporate world and continued my love affair with making art at night school and workshops. In 2010 I opened Infused Glass Works and began my artist journey fulltime.
I’m inspired by nature and the world around me. Flora over fauna. Probably because I love color so much and flowers don’t bite. Some artists prefer to create in shapes leaving the details to the viewers imagination. Although I agree this is important, it’s the juicy details that make the story for me. Kinda like people, they may be appealing to look at at first but it’s their unique details that draw you in and keep your interest.  
Glass fusion is the “sweet spot” between stained and blown glass. It’s cut like stained glass and then heated to molten hot temperatures like blown glass. Hours of experimentation are a big part of this craft. Each sheet of colored glass has different minerals like glaze. If one color reacts different under heat and cools faster than another, the piece will crack. It is oh sooooo worth it though because no other medium plays with light quite the same.
 I’m a follow my heart kinda gal and variety is the spice of life which means I had to answer the calling and add painting to my repertoire. Every new skill influences and enhances other mediums in wonderful ways. I find satisfaction in balancing the elements of a composition or designing complimentary pattern series. The intention behind each piece is to uplift and spread joy.
So my art is an ever unfolding story told in glass and canvas and now in the digital world of NFT’s. I’m super excited to see where this leads and to be able to share my art with a whole new world of people. Thank you!

My kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Baird, made me feel special when she helped me create an indented rim around my clay ashtray.  The other kids all had plain rims.  But I grew up in a time when I was the only non-white kid in class, the smallest and by far, the shyest.  In grade one, I added clothes to my stick men drawings.  By grade five, one of my crayon and water colour paintings, an imaginary street scene, was shown in a children’s art show at the Vancouver Art Gallery.  My grade five art teacher, Miss Mould, praised me for my creations.
An artist lived across the alley from where our house was in Vancouver.  When he learned I liked to draw, he invited me to sit in his garden to draw flowers.  He even gave me some pastels to try out.  In grade 12, I graduated with the high school Art Award, nominated by Mr. Spence, who believed that I had the most talent to succeed as a real artist.

I did not go to the Vancouver School of Art.  Born into a working class family with a single mother of four, my head prevailed over my heart.  Against all odds, I became the first woman to graduate with a bio-resources engineering degree in 1978.  During my undergraduate studies, I took all the fine arts courses that non-fine arts students were allowed to tak.  Ranjan Sen, a brilliant art professor, pushed out of the box thinking to the limits, lamenting that passion was not enough to succeed.  Discipline was mandatory.

With zeal, I tackled life drawing classes, formally and informally.  My best art student friend, Willa Lee Downing, was by my side.  Like me, she had a technical career, before returning to art.  Tuesday evenings, were spent in the Chinatown studio of now world reclaim artist, Raymond Chow.  While peers drank beer and partied, I drew and painted daily.  Art was my salvation.  Before I left Vancouver in 1979 to pursue an engineering career in Calgary, my art was shown and sold in juried art shows run by the Federation of Canadian Artists.  But the honour I am indebted for, is having my art shown at a rigorous art show at the Klee Wyck Gallery in West Vancouver.  There were over 300 submissions.  Only 60 paintings were accepted.  One of them was mine.
When I arrived in Calgary, I joined the Federation of Canadian Artists.  To my delight, the late Liz Allen, a prominent Calgary artist and printmaker, led Tuesday evening life drawing classes in the basement of the Memorial Park library.  This ritual went on for many years.  My art continued to be shown at juried art shows in the Muttart Public Library and in 1984, I held my first one-person show at the Devonian Gardens.

My thirst to create and study art did not stop at life drawing and acrylic on canvas.  Over the years, I studied cartooning, water colours and animation.  Some years, I’ve hunkered down to drawing and colouring between the lines, on the subject of many Calgary historic houses.  I’ve deviated in creating a world about a rat named Joe and his many animal friends.  Some say I’m spontaneous or on a whim, will turn a blank canvas into a nonsensical scene about falling in love or down a hole in the middle of earth.

Perfectionism persuades me to labour over my canvas longer than average paint times.  It can take me up to a year or more to finish a painting.  The process in creating also involves a process of strategizing which colours will be chosen and which layering process will be applied, so the brilliance of the subject matter radiates from within.  Word-of-mouth, has been the means, by which art collectors hear about me, and typically, like what they see.

After motherhood, career and divorce, self-discovery and re-inventing myself from engineer, journalist, author back to engineering and then in film making, I’ve settled in to what always brought me joy – art.  There’s something magical when the brush sweeps across the canvas.  That magic is what I hope to share with the world, that joy which lifts one soul and spirit.
I will be Feature Artist July 2023 at CAG.

Connie Geerts was born in 1965, the youngest of six children raised on a farm in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.  It was a fairly idyllic childhood filled with lots of unsupervised exploring and evenings spent with her siblings drawing at the kitchen table.  

Geerts started her professional art career with a move to the West coast in 1987.  After exploring many materials she fell in love with acrylic painting and has been working in the medium ever since.  During this time, she also worked as a news videographer, and started creating sculpture, joining the Vancouver Island Sculptors Guild.  Geerts began showing her work professionally in 1997, and has been consistently represented by a number of galleries since that time.

In 2000, Geerts moved to Alberta, Canada, and was able to devote more time to creating art.  She also spent time working in film and theatre, building props and sets.  The influence of her video editing career showed up in her painting around this time, with her style taking on the look of broken up digital imagery.  Since then, her artwork has appeared many times on television, in magazines and books.

While continuing to paint, Geerts studied bronze casting in Mexico but fell in love again when she discovered glass kiln casting in 2005.  She found the same subtle translucency of colour that she enjoyed with acrylic paint was possible in a three dimensional medium.  Since then she has been experimenting with pairing contrasting materials in sculpture, working with glass, concrete, plaster, metal and most recently, resin.

In 2018 Geerts began sharing her painting skills through weekly classes and workshops.

Geerts continues to develop her multi-disciplinary practice, adding mixed media into her acrylic  paintings while also devoting equal time to discovering the possibilities in sculpture.  In 2021 she started sharing her work as NFTs.  Geerts works out of her studios at her home in Alberta, Canada.

Mandy Stobo is a passionate artist, entrepreneur, actor and mother. She is dedicated to her community, her family and her artwork while always taking in as many new perspectives, experiences and memories that life can offer. By taking creativity and combining it with technology, Mandy believes that every dream is possible for connection and inspiration in the new world of Web3. 

Mandy’s use of vibrant colours and emotions in her paintings are a direct reflection of her outlook on life. Her vibrant personality is only matched by her vibrant passion for her hometown of Calgary, Alberta. She is a champion for the city and its artistic and cultural endeavors. Mandy finds herself involved in various projects from illustrating the children’s book “C is for Calgary”, Grandpa’s Forest, Bee Love and others, to designing brands for various businesses, to working in film and television such as HBO’s The Last of us, Fargo, Haunting Melissa, Heartland, Young Drunk Punk, Jann, and Hold The Dark, to name a few. She also is a leading artist in content creation in the new media of Virtual Reality, adding empathy to a digital space in a magnificent way. With several VR films under her belt and a few in the making, she hopes to create work in this landscape that holds compassion and has longevity. Her newest shows “ Life” and “Queens” and “ Canada’s Walk of Fame” will blend mediums, and utilize Augmented Reality within her new portraits to help illuminate more of each of the pieces' stories. She just completed a speaking series globally presenting her work in the digital design field.

It was Mandy’s love for her city that initially sparked the Bad Portrait Project. It started as a humble way for Mandy to celebrate Calgary and its inhabitants through expressive pop-art inspired watercolour and sharpie portraits. However, the project skyrocketed online and past Calgary’s city limits with the help of social media. Bad portraits are now seen internationally and are featured in The City of Calgary Public Arts Program, on Calgary C-Trains, branding for companies, personalities, celebrities and politicians . The project has revolutionized the accessibility of art and connects the viewer directly with the artist, and has garnered her many moments in media, experiments in projects, and awards such as Top 40 Under 40, Forbes Magazine, and CBC Q. 

Mandy holds a deep connection with music, theatre and film, as she loves to challenge herself through live performance painting using AR, green screens, projection mapping and more.  She is heavily involved in many charities and fundraisers, and is a big advocate for mental health. Her contemporary work has been collected  all over the world and is currently working on her new body of work with the use of storytelling in the Metaverse through AR, NFT’s and creativity. 

Stobo dreams of providing a solid world for her son’s through her art, and will never stop the search for great color, joy, healing and community building through creation.
